Median: The median value of a set of numbers is the middle value. Half of the numbers are below the median and half are above.
Average: The average value of a set of numbers is the result of adding all of the numbers together and dividing by the number of numbers.
The Median was used in this case due to the fact that the average is easily skewed by extremely high or low values. Were we to use the average it would be lower than the reality if there were a few really low values, the same would be true in the other direction if there were some really high values.
