To protect the small and vulnerable population of non-binary individuals Census Canada has distributed them into the binary gender categories and symbolized this by the use of the “＋”.

While there have been no studies, nor does Census Canada capture this information, it is believed that there is a sizable population of those who identify as two-spirited, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, or intersex.
