Core Housing Need

Core Housing Need: Statistics Canada uses a combination of three factors to determine whether or not someone falls within their definition of core housing need: spending 30% or more of their income on shelter, dwellings in need of major repairs, and/or dwellings considered unsuitable.1

Affordable Housing

Denman

There is no government subsidised housing available on Denman. Some residents likely receive rent assistance based on age and/or income level, but this is unknown. Housing is challenging to find in general, aside from affordability. The Denman Housing Association has been able to acquire land in the village (downtown) core that will contain affordable rental units in the future.

The Denman Community Land Trust Association (DCLTA) is working to develop a seniors’ affordable housing project after an earlier project fell through. Both the DCLTA and the Denman Housing Association are working closely to develop affordable housing on the island.

Hornby

There is no government-subsidised housing available on Hornby. Some residents likely receive rent assistance based on age and/or income level, but this is unknown. Housing is challenging to find in general, aside from affordability. The Hornby Island Housing Society is exploring options to expand its 11-unit Elder Village to begin to address the 20+ person wait list. Additionally, on a second site, the Housing Society has a project application in process with BC Housing to build 26 units for all ages.
